Forspoken review7/5/2023 ![]() ![]() Like any isekai protagonist worth their salt, Frey is initially resistant to her new surroundings before discovering that she's actually ideally suited to the world she's found herself trapped in. It's difficult to like the standoffish and stubborn Frey, the incessantly sarcastic Cuff (who regularly quips in Frey's ear like a discount JARVIS), or any of the survivors who are all too eager to completely rely on Frey's protection from the Break while also asking her to complete boring optional tasks like going on a tour of a lifeless hub or petting a bunch of sheep.īy clicking 'enter', you agree to GameSpot'sįorspoken's story is one about belonging-finding a place you want to stay and a people you wish to protect. The whole situation is an intriguing narrative setup but boring or unlikable characters let it down. Frey is the only exception, making her an ideal candidate for exploring the Break, finding its source, and destroying it. This blight, which Frey calls the Break, covers the land and transforms living creatures into mutated monsters. There, she bonds with a sentient brace she nicknames Cuff and then encounters a group of survivors living in the last city that's free from the effects of a dangerous miasma. In Forspoken, protagonist Frey finds herself trapped in the magic-filled world of Athia after stumbling through a portal. Luminous Productions' action-RPG feels great when it allows you to really stretch your legs and magically parkour across its fantasy landscape, but combat is clunky and regular exposition too often stalls the action. Instead, it tells a largely forgettable story that sets up major stakes but fails to offer a compelling reason for why the player should care. Forspoken should stand out in a sea of open-world RPGs, and the way it is at the moment failed to do so.Though it takes inspiration from isekai-stories in which people from Earth are transported to and become trapped in a fantastical world (think Alice in Wonderland but Japanese)- Forspoken ultimately doesn't understand what makes that genre so popular. It is possible that the magical combat, and hopefully the visuals, will become more intriguing over time. Is it worth playing?įorspoken's early chapters that we’ve seen so far have not been a good place to look for enjoyment but there is definitely potential and plenty of room to improve. Aren’t you tired of video games being too silent? Forspoken's music has been a great addition to the overall gaming experience, in my opinion and the soundtracks are really well-made too. One thing we have to take notes on in this open universe is the music that plays. There aren’t almost any enemy designs that is really unique other than the crystal lizard boss. It's filled with basic fantasy stuff, such as green fields, brown castles and beige rocky areas. The textures are blurred and the draw distances are quite short. Honestly, it isn't a very attractive game. It doesn't display as much graphical power as you'd want from a new-gen showcase. Graphicsįorspoken's visuals make it even worse. She will automatically jump over gaps and leap over small objects. Frey doesn't need to worry about anything when she does this. Filling out lists of tasks that relate to the main combat mechanics of a game is quite fulfilling and fun.Īthia's fields are a delight to run across without a care in their world. Completing these challenges will increase your spell's effectiveness. For example, shooting enemies in parkour mode while using spellcraft. However, it appears that you can choose up to three challenges at once. Spellcraft is not a system that I fully understand. In some key ways, however, it feels more like a game that was released in early 2000s. It's evident that the game combines next-gen visuals and fluid traversal skills in a large open world. But it is also a plus that you can do almost anything in Forspoken from throwing rocks at your enemies to summoning flaming troops to fight alongside you. The first few chapters can feel a bit boring because you have to hold the trigger to fire chunks and rocks at enemies, while sometimes avoiding an attack. In the first chapters, however, there are only a handful. Some of them look really cool in gameplay trailers. ![]() The game's rapid nature and the ability to keep you guessing as it uses its many magical powers makes it very tactical. ![]() For more details on the lore you can out our Forspoken Story article.įorspoken's greatest strengths lie in combat. Frey is on the hunt for a way to home and must use her magical abilities to navigate vast landscapes and fight monstrous creatures. Forspoken is the story of Frey, a young New Yorker who is transported to Athia, a beautiful but cruel land.
